Wooramel, WA.
A short drive up the road and we stopped at Wooramel Riverside Retreat. This was a cute little station stay on the banks of the Wooramel River, and we were lucky enough to see water in the river. It is actually what they call an upside down river but due to the rain and cyclone lately it is flowing a little bit on top as well. A very relaxing setting to wind down from a busy week at Shark Bay.
Our first night there was a travelling country singer who performed, and we watched for a little bit at the cool little campfire area with pretty lights hanging from the trees.
The highlight of the trip was the pools - more artesian water, but this one was a pleasant 35 degrees. We spent a good hour or more playing around in these ones.
The station has lots of quirky little metal sculptures and a "tip" full of old things to look around. Bridie was intrigued by the old motor bikes and wanted to have a ride. The rest of us where slightly worried about snakes.
The sandy river bed was the perfect playground for the kids and Kylie used the time to complete some of her push ups for the Mental Health Suicide Awareness Push Up Challenge. The kids had fun joining in as well.
Kylie did the river walk on the afternoon and found some very cool caterpillars along the way. The huge spots on their back must be to look like eyes and hopefully scare the birds away from eating them. The birds were spectacular here. We have been turned into bird watchers during this trip. There was a hawk of some variety nesting across the river from our camp. And there were lots of pretty colourful finches and parrot type birds flying around as well.
Our neighbours from Shark Bay, Malena and Michael travelled here the same day as us and treated us with a delicious dinner of fettuccine and schnitzels. Malena's sister Mary, who we also met at Shark Bay made the sauce for the pasta and it was extremely yummy. The kids loved setting the table and watching the fire and learning little Italian songs from Malena. It was such a fun relaxing evening.
