Quobba Station, WA

King Waves Kill and Coral Cuts - that is all you need to know from this week. The most amazing snorkling on the West Coast of Australia - a sheltered little bay called "The Aquarium", highly recommended to us by Chris from DLO and it did not disappoint. We were always going to stay here but the only decision to make was to stay at the campground 2 mins walk away or at the station 10kms away. We eventually chose the station, mostly for the showers (and the washing machine!) and were pleasantly surprised by a very well equipped, newly resurfaced tennis court. The other campground was packed tightly like sardines, so we were very happy with our choice in the end. The more Saul researched Quobba the more he discovered that it is one of the best land based game fishing locations in the country. But it come with a price and there were multiple plaques around the rock edges, marking the place where fishermen had lost their lives. Every time Saul went out fishing on the ...

Wooramel, WA.

A short drive up the road and we stopped at Wooramel Riverside Retreat. This was a cute little station stay on the banks of the Wooramel River, and we were lucky enough to see water in the river. It is actually what they call an upside down river but due to the rain and cyclone lately it is flowing a little bit on top as well. A very relaxing setting to wind down from a busy week at Shark Bay. Our first night there was a travelling country singer who performed, and we watched for a little bit at the cool little campfire area with pretty lights hanging from the trees. The highlight of the trip was the pools - more artesian water, but this one was a pleasant 35 degrees. We spent a good hour or more playing around in these ones.  The station has lots of quirky little metal sculptures and a "tip" full of old things to look around. Bridie was intrigued by the old motor bikes and wanted to have a ride. The rest of us wher...

Denham, WA.

We were all very excited to head to our next location - the most western part of the Australian continent, Shark Bay. We stayed at Denham, but most people would know the area for Monkey Mia which is 20km on the other side of the peninsula. We stayed here for a week (so this is a long post). On our first day we got up early and went to see the dolphins. Because they are wild dolphins there is no guarantee that any dolphins will turn up, and 2 days the previous week no dolphins visited, but luckily 4 dolphins visited the morning we were there. We also saw a big turtle swimming under the jetty. No dugongs though, apparently they don't like the cold weather and head out to deep sea in the winter. Our next stop for the day was the Aquarium - which was more of a hit with the kids than the dolphins. It was a very cool set up - they had lots of open tanks that we could walk around and look at, and then outside they had the big shark tank. We...
